Mgahinga is Uganda’s smallest national park, it is located in south western corner of Uganda. The park covers the northern slants of the three northernmost Virunga volcanoes, and these are mt. muhavura that stands at 4,127m, Gahinga 3,474m,mt sabinyo 3,645m.the park is about 10km south of Kisoro and is enclosed to volcanoes national park of Rwanda in the south and to the west by Virunga national park of the democratic republic of Congo. Mgahinga is 33.7sq. km and consists of partly forested slopes of the three extinct volcanoes. From a long view, the huge cones of the Virunga volcanoes dominate the landscape and gesture you as you approach. When you reach the park, you can get a great overview of the area by walking up the viewpoint, just a few minutes from ntebeko gate.
There are a lot of things to see from mgahinga gorilla national park. From endangered mountain gorillas to golden monkeys, 3 of the Virunga volcanoes and unique flora and fauna, all these rewarding a chance for several activities to take place including gorilla tracking, volcano hiking, golden monkey tracking, Batwa trail, this walk is conducted by the Batwa guides who provide insights to their traditional forest life and culture, bird watching, Garama cave exploration. Mgahinga is the home to more than half of the world’s population of mountain gorillas and these are the main reason as to why the park was created by the Ugandan government controlled by Uganda wildlife Authority. Mountain gorillas are habituated under several groups and this makes mgahinga unique because these endangered creatures are a must see.
